Hello all,
I am very new to chickens. I got some chicken from a man who had to travel and couldn't take care of his 6 hens. 1 of them is white and I noticed her butt was not very clean and fluffy. I am not sure what is going on. I searched online and read a few things. I took some photos before and after washing her butt :)
Do you see anything abnormal or is this hen a bit sick and what can it be? She is laying large white eggs and eggs are all clean outside. She acts healthy, eats well and all. My chicken run around half acre yard all day long so they are free range and so far I have not seen any health problems in any of them. I have a total of 13 hens and 1 rooster. This one was giving to me 2 weeks ago. All the other chicken's butts are all fine. I was told she is about 2 years old.

After bathing her: I didn't see anything unusual just a dirty butt and dirty feathers and naked areas where there is no feather. I was wondering if she is molting and this is normal but I am sure her butt shouldn't be so dirty. Her stool is a bit soft so she might have a diarrhea.
 
It looks to me like she is or has been feather pecked. This is when other chickens pick and peck and pull at the feathers, till eventually there are no feathers left in an area. We had the same problem, but we did not take action soon enough and before we knew it all our chickens had bare butts and it was a mess. :/ The feathers will grow back, but they do need some help because the other chickens will just want to continue to peck the bare spot on chicken. So I recommend getting Pine Tar, it really does work amazingly! It's used on horses hooves, but if you put on some rubber gloves (because it can be a skin irritant to humans) and just wipe the Pine Tar all over the chickens butt where it's bare, you should be good. This deters other chickens from pecking because it tastes and smells awful! And since no chickens are pecking the bare spot, the feathers can grow back. The Pine Tar will stain the feathers on the chicken, but eventually it comes out. Here's a picture of Pine Tar:

When we first used it we were doubtful, but before we knew it our chickens were growing feathers back! :) And you might have to apply it a few times, maybe every few days, just to make sure it deters the other chickens enough. Hope this helps! :)
 
Thanks I will look into it. But I never see any hens touching her. I am home all day and they are around me. I never ever saw her being pecked there. But thanks for the info.
 
Your welcome. :) It's possible that your hens don't peck, but at your hen's old home there were birds that pecked her. To me, it does look like she's been pecked sometime in her life. :/
