Hi folks,
My name is Jackie. I lived on a small farm when I was way younger and farming is my dream life. I have started raising chickens again and am in love with it all. Things sure have changed from the time of my family's farm of years ago. I raised Meat Kings this summer which are already in the freezer. I have 6 Leghorn and 4 Reds with a Rhode Island Rooster for my egg laying stock. And I just received 12 roosters and three Light Sussex hens. The roosters will be Meat as well unfortunately. I say this because if I had my way and was rich, I would not kill anything at all. But we can't do that here and now. I will be receiving more Pullets real soon for more breeding and egg stock. I built my hen pen with two separate sides to play with depending on what I want to do. I insulated top to bottom including the floors for maximum comfort through winter and summer. I still have work to do on this end. I have a large outdoor area for them but spoil them by letting them out onto my backyard.Lawn area for as much protein and diversity as I can give them for their best health. I love it when my hens stand on my feet to wait for me to dig their worms and bugs, it is so funny. I have a lot to do with them do they are quite comfortable with me. I received roosters recently as my neighbor needed to scale down and I found that a few of them had no tails and sad sores on their behinds that were being picked at terribly. They were kept inside the barn since birth and were very afraid of the outdoors for a few days. They were picking on each other madly so yesterday I extended their cage area as well. They are so much happier already but I wanted to make it better for them. I actually care very much for my animals even though I have to kill some them, I still sit with them in their pens and care for them in every way. I get such joy when they come running to the fence just because I walk out the door. My Reds are a particular delight as they know I almost always have house food in my arms when I come out. I plan on having Pigs again, a couple of Ducks as I love them so much and maybe a goat because I do a lot of preserves and want to get into making my own soap and stuff. I also raise a fair size Garden that helps me to be diverse in feeding my animals. Call me weird but I am at peace with the farm life and wish I could make lots of money doing this instead. Through my years of experience I have found at least one meaningful thing constant, you do not have to be unkind to any creature even if they are just food to you. I find when they are happy they are wonderful to watch and seem to grow much better, are amazingly friendly and are a huge delight to me. I even enjoy cleaning their pen. Which I have to do right now in fact. I hope to make lots of Back Yard friends here and welcome anyone to talk to about this really amazing way of life.xoxoxo
