Thanks Food! Will do! I have the Sumatra going in lockdown tomorrow! Cross your fingers for me. And I guess I need to up my humidity to 70% right?

Amy, Question! I need to up humidity to 70% for lockdown tomorrow right? And can you send me link for hands on so just in case I need to be walked through it?
 
Amy, I got a couple last minute ?'s for you or anyone! #1 Can I drop my temp. to 98 in lockdown and humidity up to 70%? #2 I was using the shelf liner with newspaper under it in the brooder. After 3 days use pine shavings. Is that correct or can I use the pine from day 1?

Trying to remember if you have a forced air incubator w/o going back to read. If so, yes that's fine. You don't have to lower temps at hatch but some do. 70% is good for hatch. As for shavings, either way is fine. I use coarse pine shavings right from day one and have never had a problem. Good luck on your hatch!!!

10-13% is what they should loose between the time they are laid and the time they hatch. I am not particularly fond of weighing. I go by the actual size of the air cell. I'm a visual person, not a maths person. I'd check the air cell. If it looks small at lockdown, I'd hatch it upright in a cutdown carton. That helps to keep excess moisture from entering the internal pip and drowning the chick. But you want to keep a close eye on the bottom of the egg if the air cell is really small because you have higher instances of malposition. If you have an egg with extra moisture pipping at the wrong end you want to get it turned around and make sure that the pip hole is clear and the beak is out.
