Our barnevelder hen has a saggy crop and a large lump in it. The lump is definitely grains, but feels gummy. If you squish it, it holds its shape. We've been massaging it and some of the outer seeds have come off. Is this sour crop? She seems fine in herself, same appetite, tail up, dust bathing, digging. She also moves her head in a strange way like she's trying to swallow.

Take a smell of her breath - if it smells sour, then it could well be sour crop. If not, then it could be impacted crop. I'd suggest doing searches, based on your sniff test as to how to treat her. I have no experience of dealing with either, so I can't offer any advice, sorry.

Her breath definitely doesn't smell of anything unusual so I'm guessing compacted crop. Does anyone else have ideas on how to treat this?
