Good morning,

I discovered yesterday that one of my six-month-old Rhode Island Red pullets has a larger-than-a-tennis-ball swelling on her rear-end. It's soft and kind of squishy, but she's eating normally and gets around just fine.

I did isolate her to see if/what she was pooping, but nothing in the 90 minutes I had her under (my) observation.

Online I found the following videos that seemed to address both the symptom and how to drain:

I'm wondering what I might be missing before I attempt any 'needlework'?

Thanks, everyone!

The swelling could be fat, a cyst, or many other things. Ascites or fluid in the belly should look more tight, and not just under the vent. I have a couple of hens with the pouch under the vents who get along fine, except I have to occasionally clean off dried or messy droppings that get caught on the feathrs there. Below are pictures by Casportpony of a hen with ascites, and it is being drained with an 18 gauge needle to remove fluid:

Thanks for the photos! 18-ga. sounds big and looks bigger!

Here she is. She actually seemed smaller when I looked in on her and the flock last night, but I got the needles and syringes anyway.

She's a really patient bird! I had to clean the poop on her fanny last night, and she talked to me as if she knew I was trying to help!

Maybe chickens are smarter than we give 'em credit for! :)
