Broodiest hen breed?

Game breed hens are noted for broodiness, and can be tough enough to take good care of their chicks.  Several bantam breeds tend to broodiness;  Belgian d'Uccles, cochins, and Silkies come to mind.  My BLR Wyandotte hens have raised several batches of chicks, love it!  A larger hen can brood more eggs, an advantage.  A big Malay type hen would really be impressive!  Mary
Agree, Game hens do go broody a lot. My cousins had 5 game hens they bought from someone not wanting them to go broody. Well the next day 4 of them went broody and the other one did the next week! Then they ended up selling them, feel bad for them birds getting sold to so many people.

Yep, I agree with these guys. I have a game hen raising half game chicks right now actually. If you're gonna keep them penned, you can get away with using the larger, "gentler" breeds to raise chicks. If you plan on turning them loose on your land you have to get something that is programed to be more alert- gamefowl, Sumatra, phoenix, etc. The neighbors' pit mixes visit here frequently, so mine stay penned up unless I'm home unfortunately.

My silkies are super broody. They will hatch anything. I always have two or three broody at all times. Many people buy silkies when they are trying to hatch out pea fowl and need a mama incubator.
