I don't have to do anything to keep the water from freezing. As long as the sun is out, it usually keeps the pen right above freezing. Most winter days in CT are in the 20's or 30's, so the pen will stay about 10-20 degrees warmer. It also makes a huge different that the wrap keeps the wind out I think that is what freezes water the fastest. I use 5 gallon waterers, so that helps. Smaller waterers will freeze faster. The week before I wrapped the run my waterers were freezing by evening. Once I wrapped it, no more frozen waterers.
