Chicken Breed Focus - Sumatra

Hi! We are about to purchase a breeding pair of Sumatras and was wondering if there is anything I need to know about keeping them for breeding? Right now we are just starting off with one hen and one roo but I'm hoping to get some more hens. :)
They are both bantam black sumatras.
I've read that the hens go broody often, and that the males are usually aggressive during the breeding season.
Thanks in advance!

In nearly 20 years of breeding LF Black Sumatras I've only had one rooster that was aggressive towards me. Not to say they can't be aggressive but it happens far less than commonly thought. They are aggressive towards other roosters when they are with hens. In bachelor groups they are far less aggressive towards each other.

Hens are very prone to go broody. Their reputation for being poor layers is due to them going broody often.

Also you'll need to cover your outside run. Sumatras are VERY good fliers. And can be very difficult to catch if they get out.

Thank you! All of our runs are covered, and we will continue to do so!

I think this breed is truly unique. I remember years ago a pair was for sale at my local feed store. I want them so bad. I still till this day kicking to myself of regret of not buying them!
