So we have a Golden Campine pullet that just started laying in late Nov, she's the first of our hens to lay. Her breed description on Meyer's (where we got her) says her breed lays 3-4 medium sized white eggs a week. Well in the past 11 days we have had 10 white peewee eggs from her. As of right now she's laid an egg the last 7 days in a row!!! I'm not worried about the size I figure they'll get a tad bit bigger as she gets more used to this game.
The funniest part of all of this is she was the chick that came as part of a rare breed assortment and when I figured out what she was I was disappointed because it said she would be late to mature and I wanted earlier maturing birds to beat the winter. Well winter as defined by coastal NC. As of right now we have a black Australorp, two Wellsummers, a GLW, and a Delaware which are all supposed to be varying degrees of early maturing (according to Meyer) and not a one of them is laying.
We did have them free range for a bit but this past week have confined them to the coop and their run to make sure they aren't laying in the woods or under the porch. They're on grower feed with oyster shell offered (Zazu's seem pretty sturdy) and of course treats such as alfalfa sprouts and mealworms because they're spoiled. No artificial light beside the security light in the backyard on top of an electrical post. The BA and Wells have full wattles and nearly full combs all bright red, and the other two are a tad bit further behind. I think the 3 that are almost there might lay during Dec but the other two are probably not going to do anything until later Jan or Feb. At least thanks to Zazu no one in the house is threatening to fry them for non production.
