I have noticed lately that my straw in the nesting boxes has been getting removed by my chickens. I have not really had a problem with this before. Any body else experience this? Any help/advice????

Create a deeper lip on your nest boxes and switch to hay...it has longer, finer strands and is more easily arranged into a nest, which is what they are attempting to do with the straw when they scratch it out like that.

Thank you. I can tell they get very excited when I walk in the coop with straw and start putting it into their boxes. I will try the hay. I tried using shavings but I think they like the straw better, so I just stuck with that. It just seems like within the last month I have went through a lot more straw than usual. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!

They are most likely doing more "nesting" behavior as the daylight lengthens, gearing up for spring laying. Chickens just seem to like nesting material they can shape into a bowl shape...once they get it there and it stays in that shape~which straw and wood shavings can't seem to do~they pretty much leave it alone, other than pecking at a few strands as they sit there and placing them on their own backs or putting them in another place on the nest.
