I would like to raise mandarin ducks but I have heard that the can't keep their feathers
pretty without water. I have a 3 1/2 acre pond but we had a otter kill one of our swans
so I don't want to put them there. Would a koi pond work like 10'/15' area?

Mandarins are wild natured ducks, no you cannot 100% tame them, if they have a chance to fly off they will. I recommend looking more into this and building an aviary, do your research and you'll see what I am talking about.

They'll have to be in a completely enclosed aviary. High sided solid walls so that anything passing by won't spook them. And a top of flight netting, even pinioned birds can fly straight up if they get spooked. Even hand raised from ducklings they will still be WILD. A pond/pool roughly 4 feed across is sufficient for a pair or two.

Not really the answer you were wanting but it is what your facing if you want to keep these lil guys.

Yes very true these are not domesticated birds. They have a big nature drive to migrate and breed and are very easily scared becuase of their prey instinct. Aviary is the best way to go. They aren't too hard to build if you put forth effort and are totally worth it if you give a big enough area and maintain it to look nice and clean.
