Returning Member Now in Texas

Welcome back to BYC the Great Home away from Home, and Welcome to TEXAS, Tuscola Clucks!
I am not really sure how I stumbled across your thread but it's kinda' neat that I did since I actually raise Swedish Flower Hens, plus, also... live here in Texas!
We do have a few other breeds, too, because...well... who can have just one?! But our true focus is on the Swedes.
We are using a spiral mating system for our flock of 50+ SFHs who are divided into 3 distinct clans for mating to help ensure more genetic diversity in their offspring (since, like much of the breeding stock out there, almost all of our stock is out of Greenfire Farms).
I should let you know though, I am not one of the breeders that is trying to ensure completely random pairings with NO human intervention because they are a 'landrace' breed. Of course I admire and respect the diversity that has developed within this breed as it became a landrace, in fact that diversity was part of the initial attraction for me, so I am certainly doing my best to maintain it. However, I personally am breeding them for maintaining/improving production of both meat and eggs as well plus selecting against a few of the 'negative' traits that pop up here and there.
I know some people will shun me for that but I actually have roots in Sweden and therefor feel fairly justified in selectively breeding our Swedish flock, just as my ancestors selected which of their favorite birds would continue on breeding and which of their not-so-favorite birds would land in the stew pot!
Anyhow, I'll stop my ramblings, if you are looking for someone in the general vicinity who is supporting this breed with a dedication and passion that is on par with Greenfire Farms, but offering them at a more comfortable cost, just let me know.

It's good to be here - Texas and BYC! We literally bought our "secondary" flock this past weekend. I seriously considered ordering from a hatchery so I could select breeds, but we were only looking for eight birds and most places want minimum orders in the double digits. One of the local feed stores had a nice selection of breeds, so we selected from them. Unfortunately, I'm not looking for any more birds at the moment! That's not to say I won't be in the future, though, and I am still interested in the SFH.
Where are you located? I know "general vicinity" has a different meaning in Texas than the rest of the country. If we consider expanding the flock, or replacing the older birds down the road, I'll definitely keep you in mind if it's not too far of a trip.

Understandable. I know once we decide on getting a few more birds to expand the flock a bit I sure don't like to wait around, especially when I go into the feed store and there all cute & fluffy and just right there in front of me, begging me to take 'em home! Lol... Last summer, that's exactly how we ended up with a half dozen Black Cochins and a pair of whatever-they-ares (feed store said Americaunas but that wasn't the case:) And well, technically "we" didn't decide to expand the flock...I guess it was just me that day because when I casually mentioned the new additions to my husband that evening, he made me promise "no more new chickens this year!"
Ahhh, that was then, but this is now...the year of the rooster ~:> ...I've already tested the waters with some hatching eggs this year & so far so good
Yeah, to me "General vicinity" in Texas is 4hrs. or less, otherwise it feels like driving across a couple of regular sized states! We are actually in Flower Mound, TX which is a bit of a haul, it looks like 3hrs. But I do have family in Weatherford that we go see from time to time so that would save an hour on the drive time. If you do end up expanding in the future and want to add some Swedes, just let me know & I'd be happy to help :)

Hello there, and welcome to Backyard Chickens! I am quite glad you decided to join the flock, and please make yourself at home here! Enjoy BYC! :frow
