Turkey basics vs chicken basics

OK just out of sheer curiosity... Where do you guys get your info from? Is there any links you can share that you personally reference or is it all first hand trial and error knowledge?

My info comes from approximately thirty years of raising turkeys plus much reading. If you have specific questions, a good source is to use the advanced search feature to limit searches to this forum.

Unlike the other two posters, I never recommend feeding chick starter to turkey poults. Depending on where you purchase it, the chain feed stores carry chick starter that is anywhere from 15% to 20% protein which is a far cry from the 28% protein turkey/gamebird starter that I use.

I do a lot of reading, as well as observations of my flock, as well as trying things to see if and how they work out.

I recommend Storeys Guide to Raising Turkeys as a good reference book.

Porters Heritage Turkeys has a great website, full of good info. I have read a lot about turkeys, but raising them for a few years has made me a little more "chill" about it. They are not nearly as demanding or touchy as the literature I read. It helps that I don't have Blackhead in my area, so running them with chickens has worked fine. I've hatched hundreds of poults and raised dozens to adulthood without any problems other than some bouts of MS. Most recover from that and seem to have a lifelong immunity afterward.

I don't plan to ever go big with turkeys, they are not as profitable as chickens in my area, but they are the best pets and I don't expect to ever be without them. I intend to keep a small, closed flock of Mottled Blacks and Royal Palms to provide poults to the local market.

If you raise wild turkeys, be careful letting them out. They usually fly after coming out...far...

In most states, a permit is required to raise wild turkeys. Those permits typically require the wild turkeys to be penned in such a manner that they cannot "get out".

The OP lives in Kentucky which appears to be one of the states requiring a permit and prohibiting "free ranging of captive wild turkeys".
