We have a pair of buff geese, Chester and Penelope, and they are pretty funny and happy campers. Last fall we finished a lovely 20x10 pen with an extra 4x6 goose house. All of it is made predator proof.

Two questions: what do folks use as the flooring of the pen? Right now it's just wire so predators can't tunnel under but there is poop everywhere. I'll spray it down but can seem to keep up. Should we put a four or five inch layer of rock? Chips and constantly flip it out?

Second question: what's good strong grass to grow in the yard that will keep my lawn green and my geese happy? Right now we have 1/2 moss and 1/2 grass. The soil is less than ideal. Should we fertilize with something organic so it can grow roots faster and keep the plant ahead of the geese?

Nothing you try is going to make grass grow in such a small area. I don't like anyone on wire. You can put down some pea gravel, cover with a weed barrier than throw sand down on top of that so you can hose it down and it will drain. I have an abundance of straw so I cover the pen with straw and just change it when it gets skanky. Mine are out as much as possible to graze. If I have to leave them up,they get hay to graze on.

The geese will not like the wire underfoot so you'll have to put down a good layer of pea gravel. And you won't have to worry about the grass. A 10x20 pen with two geese, there won't be any grass.
