I have had backyard chickens for several years. Yestereday evening my neighbor's dog attacked my flock. He tore one of my chicken's butts (anus) out. Chicken is alive and walking around this morning. What if anything can I do for this chicken?

! Pleased you joined our community but sorry to hear about the dog attack! From your description it sounds pretty grim and the best thing might be to put the chicken down. But the folks in the ER Forum may have some treatment ideas - but I am pretty sure a picture of the injury will be needed. Best wishes!!

x2 on the advice from redsoxs...please check in with the experts on the ER forum. Have you spoken to your neighbors about the dog? You need to let them know what happened and hopefully, they'll take steps to keep attacks from happening in the future.

Best of luck to you and your girl.

Thank you for the advice. The sad thing is this is the 2nd time it has happened. 13 chickens lost the first time. I have spoken with neighbors but they continue to let their dogs roam freely. I will check out the site that was mentioned.

Welcome!

I am so very sorry to hear of the attack and hope that the folks on the ER Forum are able to assist you with the care of your girl and that she makes a full recovery.

I also hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun. Unlike non chicken loving friends, family and colleagues, BYC’ers never tire of stories or pictures that feature our feathered and non feathered friends

I agree she should be put down but, first I would visit the neighbors and show them what their dog did. Hope it gives them nightmares. Can you put an electrified fence around your chicken area - so their dog will get a " not so gentle" reminder to keep away from your property.
