ive lost over thirty chickens to hawks, i now have to keep my chickens in a small pen with the top covered with wire, is there anyway
to keep the hawks away without standing guard with my 12 guage?

this is a really cool site, most of my friends eyes glaze over when i talk chickens, it's nice to have folks sharing the passion of poltry.

! Great to have you aboard! Wow! That's a lot of loss to hawks. I use the shotgun method but just to scare them away and that seems to work for me. I think the covered run may be your only solution with that magnitude of a problem. Good luck to you!

You can ask for advice on the predators thread but, it seems to me your best bet is to have a lot bigger run. Also cover the run. Deer netting will not work, if a hawk in is full dive, he will tear right through it. If you use a solid cover it will also protect from the elements and add shade in summer. It is against the law to shoot raptors and you can bet that your neighbors would turn you in. Not a good idea.
