Does anyone have a method of cleaning the brooder with causing mass hysteria? I've tired taking them out... working around them... I even tried to modify a kitty litter scoop (new) to scoop out their little poops. No matter how I do it they just freak out. I'm afraid I'm going to over stress them. I have a pretty big brooder and I'm a clean freak when it comes to their living conditions. ( you could host a party in my coop it's that clean lol) has anyone come up with a better way of cleaning?

I try to freshen/ clean every other day. I use fine pine shavings they just shread newspaper. My brooder is a box for the first few weeks then I move them to a kiddy pool with a 2foot tall fence around it and net over the top so they can escape.

I only have 4 chicks and I'm using a large crate. I put an empty Noosa yogurt cup on the bottom and use a mini pitchfork (plastic fork) and scoop up the poop. I have pine shavings. They freak out at first but after a moment I pick up a couple of them and put them down and then they're fine and don't mind me at all. :) Maybe once I pick them up and put them down they realize I'm not terrorizing them?

We have the brooder and a large tote for putting the chicks in while we clean the brooder. Make the transfer from brooder to tote quick, clean fast then put them back in. That's what works for us. There will be hysteria, just work calmly and diligently. Not too fast of movements which will freak them out more and accidents happen when ya go too fast anyway. That's my two cents. Those chicks will be just fine.
