Is 8 weeks too early for a cockerel to be in the mood?

My rock chick's are 8 weeks old. One has been crowing for 3 weeks, and the others are barely trying to crow (7 total). We aren't keeping all of them long term, only till it's time for freezer camp. Estimated to be June 1.

Today I saw my white rock cockerel mount one of the hens. Jump on her back, grabbed neck feathers with his beak and did a little wiggle. It certainly looked like an attempt at mating.

Any issues with this? It seems like he is way too young for this! I'm not sure if he is the Crower, as he only crows before light.

Thoughts? Maybe he was just in a hurry to get by?

That is quite young for a cockeral to be mating, I personally would be pulling him out of the flock until his time was up. Is he mating older hens or young ones?

I had a little 10 week old cockerel mount a full grown hen. It happens. He wouldn't try to mate the pullets his age, only the older hens. I didn't see a problem with it since I was planning on getting rid of him soon after. And I did.
