clipping feathers

Clip the primary feathers of one wing. The primaries are the feathers closest to the tip of a wing, usually 9-10 in number. You can usually use scissors to do this.
 
We have done this on one wing side, sometimes have to do both sides. Very fun to watch as they do the motions.

We are bringing home 2 newly hatched chics (Buffs). I realize that breed tends to be little less apt to want to fly however, we have neighbors in close proximity with pets. I want to prevent any incidents in the future.
 
I recently clipped the feathers on my Sicilian Buttercup hen. She is small and could easily clear a 6 foot fence. I lost two of her hatch-mates to unleashed dogs when they escaped into my side yard; hence my decision to clip her feathers. For a very small, active type you may need to clip the primary flight feathers on both sides. My hen can still make it up on a 4 foot fence with all her primaries clipped!

Below is a diagram of how to clip the feathers. You should clip primary flight feathers up to the tips of the primary covert feathers and no higher. It is possible to clip secondary flight feathers but the change will be visible even when your hen's wings are folded up. Do a search for "wing clipping" on youtube, there are a lot of great instructional videos.
