French Guineas

Our local feed store are selling these in early April. I ordered 6. Can I house these with my chickens? Do they fly?

My French Guineas do more hopping up and gliding down than really flying. My regular domestics will fly up to the top of a single story building, but not my French Guineas. They may fly up to a low tree branch, not more than 5 feet off the ground. Usually, they prefer not to fly. I love the French Guineas - they stick around more, are quieter and calmer. Just my observation and I did hand raise them versus my regular domestics that I took in from another farm when they were about 4 months old.

I don't have any other poultry - only my flock of 12 guineas.

I would say the people who have the best luck integrating guineas with chickens have introduced them when the guineas were young, but some do it as adults and don't have a problem either. There are others who never have good results with flock integration of chickens and guineas.

Wish it was more exact, but it seems to be all over the board. I had to rehome an adult male guinea because he never integrated with my flock and was a big bully - he had been that way with chickens in his previous home as well.

I think it is worth a try as most of the people who are on similar threads with me have good luck with chicken and guinea integration, even when integrating them beyond the keet stage.

this is good to know. I am planning on getting jumbos my next go round...
 
I have regular pearl colored guineas and introduced them (4) to my chickens when the guineas were still only about 8 or 9 weeks old... they get along ok the guineas can be a little pushy though... I am actually letting the guineas out to free range here in the next week or so.
 
Aggression happens when they become sexually mature.... if you have enough guineas they spar amongst themselves. This involves alot of running and chasing amongst the males. Once they get over that they go back to "normal" behavior.... LOL. Older more mature birds tend to be mellower.

So keep an eye on the youngsters. It looks like they have short legs.... thats an illusion guineas are built for running.

I decided today was the day to take the leap and let them free they are taking it like fish to water.

100% free range 24 hours? This is really what I'd like to do just didn't know if I could with French...?
