Caring for a Chicken While on Vacation

Our "flock" is temporarily down to just ONE hen... and I am trying to make arrangements for her while we're on vacation for 2 weeks.

I could send her to a friends house, where she would probably stay in a dog crate in their garage at night, and would have some temporary fencing outside for during the day. They have older children who would help care for her and give her attention.

The other option is to have someone come here daily to check on her. She would have the security of her usual home, but not nearly as much attention, like she is used to with our kids.

What would you do? any advice or tips to make this work?

(Also she won't be alone for long, we have more pullets coming when we get back).

Give her company - chickens are social creatures

. I don't think she will mind the change of 'coops' since she will likely be spoiled rotten!

Chickens don't do change well at all. How soon are you going away? If you have time to get a new flock mate or two established for her, that would be in her best interests. Then, she could stay home, with familiar surroundings, and have flock mate(s) for company.

No not enough time. As I said we are getting more, but not till we get back. We had originally asked someone to come care for them all here, but now that it's just her it changes things. I feel like either option is going to be somewhat stressful....so that's why I'm trying to get some input.

I think either is a fine option. It really depends on your bird. If she is used to a lot of human company and seems to enjoy it then maybe send her to a friends for continued companionship and care. It will be stressful for her initially but hens are pretty adaptive.

I always leave mine at home and have someone come each day to feed, water, and lock them up at night. That being said, my hens are pretty independent and don't seem to really care about people (unless they have treats). I also have three at the moment so they are never actually alone.
