Just found one of my hens stumbling around (they free range) I checked her over and there does not seem to be an injury. I did find mites though :( What is the best treatment? I need to check all the other birds but getting this hen better is top priority. I have her isolated and plan to give ACV water. What else should I do? I saw her drinking. She has laid today and is trying to be a normal chicken but has issues walking. Please advise!
 
Ugh!! Just found lice on one of the other girls! Is there a different treatment for lice?
 
The best treatment for either lice or mites is to use 5-10% permethrin spray on the area where the lice or mites are found. In really cold weather the permethrin garden dust would be a better choice. It should be repeated in 7 days to get any nits that hatch, and the coop should be treated as well, with clean bedding added. Most feed stores have the 10% permethrin concentrate which will make many gallons. Here are a couple of good links to help identify lice or mites:

Thank you so much! I'll head to our local farm store. Hopefully they have it. I just cleaned the coop yesterday. Guess I'll need to clean it again. Thanks again!
 
Should there be a egg withholding period while using Permethrin?
 
Some links I read say there is no egg withdrawal for permethrin, but one from FARAD says that it can be in the egg yolk for several days after treatment in small amounts.
 
The only thing the farm store had was parmethrin powder. I'm not sure if I applied it properly but I treated all 16 chickens. I basically dusted their bottoms, or where I saw the mites/lice. Did I do this correctly? Sorry for such silly questions, this is all new to me :-o
Hopefully I can tackle to coop tomorrow.
 
That is what will work. I would continue looking for the permethrin 10% spray to then spray the doop, nests, and roosts, after removing the bedding. You can do that tomorrow or the next day. In seven days, look for bugs, and reapply the dust or the spray when you see them. Mites can hatch in 5-7 days, and lice in 10 days, so it will probably need at least one more application. Then just look them over once a week for more bugs.
