I am a first time chicken owner and I just got 4 chicks which are about week old. I have 1 thats breathing really hard; it's not as active or enthusiastic about eating or drinking as the others. It also spends a lot of time laying down and sometimes loses its balance. I fear it might not make it. Need any info please.

Greetings from Kansas, ChestnutRed89, and :welcome! Happy you joined us but sorry your chick is doing poorly. Hope it's just a weak constitution and not something contagious to his flockmates. You might try posting in the Emergencies section here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/10/emergencies-diseases-injuries-and-cures
or the Raising Baby Chicks Forum here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/11/raising-baby-chicks
Be very detailed and specific with symptoms. Hope you get some helpful advice and thanks for joining BYC! :)

Welcome!

I hope the folks on the ER Forum are able to help you out and that your little one makes a full recovery.

I also hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out

I would separate the chick it could be contagious and you wont it to spread if you don't have a separate heat lamp put a divider in whatever they are staying in.

Talk to whomever you got the chicks from if its contagious it may have gotten it from another chick. good luck and
