Hi,

Yes, it can be good to put perches in a coop. Chickens sometimes like being higher than the ground, and you could even attach a wooden ladder to the wall or a long branch from one corner to the other by just nailing them in. It would be wise to wait until your chicks are full grown until letting them free range, and having a rooster would be very helpful to warn the hens when there is danger. Also, keep on feeding them a flock raiser or layers feed even when they are free ranged, and you can also provide your chickens grit and oyster shells. If your chickens are still only a couple of months old, than give them grower feed, (they can start eating layers at about 18 weeks.)

Hope this helps!

If you have large fowl, your Roosts should be no higher than 18 inches to 2 feet off the ground. this is so the birds won't hurt their feet when they jump back down onto the ground from The roost.
For adult birds , use a 2x4 and turn it so that the bird is standing on the 4-inch side.
Best,
Karen
