I have a chicken that has been laying for about 1 year, today she is clucking very loudly and it sounds more like unhappy, instead of the contented clucking she normally does. My coop is about 300 feet away from my house and I can hear it from the house. Is something wrong?

Is she is puffed feathers---she is probably going broody?? I see/hear that all the time.

I have hens that do that before they lay an egg. It's more common in hens that don't lay daily. I personally think it's because of cramps as the egg is moving down the tract.

My new rescue chicken just gave me a heart attack. I heard her in the house making sounds I've never heard them make ever since I got them last week or over the fence from their last home. I thought she was being attacked. I ran out to see her standing near a newly laid egg. She was just going off! I went back inside to my phone conference and she kept it going. I went back out, and she was still next to her egg. I praised her and patted her and picked up the egg and she quieted down and went back with the others. Hilarious! (Once my heart stopped racing.)

Lol! Very happy about her egg?

Okay, thanks! I was just worried because she has never done it before. I think she laid an egg yesterday, unless the rooster laid one.....

Dang, I was hoping for some real insight here, as my Orpington's do this all the time. Been thinking it's egg related, but whether it's them upset about needing to lay an egg, upset about where they're going to lay an egg, upset that an egg they've laid has gone missing, or just generally being upset at the world, I have no idea.

When they first started doing it I'd come tumbling out of the house rifle in hand, looking for whatever it was that had my hen in it's jaws, to find no gruesome scene, just a hen complaining about the state of things and the unfairness of the world.
