Chicks not as interested in starter feed...

So, my chicks are 7-8 weeks and 4 weeks old. I'm noticing since they are all together, outside, in their coup/run that they seem less and less interested in the starter feed I've had them all on since getting each batch. They do eat it, but some days there is right much left when I go back to feed again. I do scatter a handful or so of old fashioned oatmeal on the ground and that disappears quick! I'm wondering if switching to maybe scratch grains would be ok for them or do they truly need the starter? They get treats about every other day (boiled egg, imitation crab meat, cooked plain ramen noodles, leftover veggies from our meals). I want them to be happy and healthy. I think they like "foraging" better than eating crumbles from a pan, and I don't think throwing the crumbles on the ground would work as it would just look like dirt....Any suggestions?

If they are free-ranging---they do not need as much feed. If you are using factory feed, "I" would switch them to a grower finisher with less protein. Scratch is ok to throw a little to them once in a while but Not as their only feed---very low protein.

Which starter feed are you currently using? Does it say on the bag how long to feed it? I've noticed considerable variation between brands as to how long to feed the starter feed to chicks. I'm trying to figure this out as well.

I'm using Dumor Starter, 20% protein. It says to switch to their Starter/Grower around 10 weeks...

That's for people that only feed them that----you feed them a lot of high protein things----crab meat, eggs, etc, etc.

Your first post made me think they were free ranging because you used "outside" and "foraging" so I thought free range. I feed the same feed as you and I raise 1000's at times and they eat it fine. Mine are not like yours---with Treats all the time---LOL.

They get the treats about every other day, and only a few bites each.... I am just wondering what feed I could switch to since they aren't eating the starter like they used to. I want to be sure they are getting enough nutrition....I guess I'm an over worried chicken mom! Lol

If you want to improve the nutritional value of the feed, you might consider trying to ferment the feed you already have. I have three seven week old pullets and they adore fermented chick feed. Given then option between the fermented and the dried, the fermented always goes first!
