Hello!

I have had chickens for a while now and absolutely love them! A few days ago we woke up an found a guinea hen hanging out in the yard and she has been roosting in a tree right beside the coop, but she seems to have flustered the flock! I think it would be fun if she stayed.

Will the flock accept her?

Thanks,
Starr

I have no experience with guineas - but CTKen has given you the best advice - do post the question in the guinea forum.

Hope you can keep it, they can be quite a help with bug control and "patrol" duties :)

Hi Starrbean-- I kept guineas for many years, but not at the same time as chickens. We had the guineas for tick control, so they free ranged and roosted in the trees. They roosted in trees year round thru rain, snow, ice, storms, etc. They are very good at evading predators. If your chickens are free range, the guinea, once accepted, could be of benefit in warning them of danger. I think your chickens would eventually get used to their alien friend...but it might take a while. Good luck!
ps if the guinea makes a 2 syllable call,(come back, come back) it's a female, and a 1 syllable call is a male.

Sue T thank you so much! --She is still with us and seems happy! She-(I'm pretty sure its a she, I'll have to listen a little more) is mingling with the flock, everyone is free range and even the 2 roosters seem to be a little more relaxed. She is going in the pen and getting water and snacking on the scratch but hasn't been in the coop were the food is. Does she need food or will she do ok with just the bugs? Thanks again for the help!

Starrbean....I'm glad to hear they are already mingling! I think a new chicken might have a harder time! I don't know if it will go in for food, you'll have to see, maybe it will follow the chickens. Maybe it came from a place where it lived in a coop....and might even roost inside.
We did feed ours--i gave them scratch and bird seed sprinkled on the ground. They didn't much like chicken feed which then got all soggy...but if i had to do it again I'd feed them flock raiser....in a feeder in a dry place. I was naive back then and didn't even have a computer to find advice.
Eggs! Ha! We never found their nests until it was too late and there'd be a huge pile. They'd be out in the pasture under a bush or tree but cleverly hidden. They all apparently used the same nest.
It has been many years since I've had guineas. I know there is.at least one guinea forum here on BYC. You can surely find expert advice there and people who keep them with chickens.
If you get a chance, take a pic of your flock w their new friend...
Good luck,
Sue
