I'm about 30 north of pgh, pa
day before Easter we bought 8 chicks.
3 barred rocks,
3 Rhode Island Reds and
2 Isa browns..
there are about 4 weeks now.. coops almost done!
because of all the threads I have been reading on this wonderful sight, we are
going with:
2 nesting boxes
pine chips bedding.
poop tray with pdz
1 long roosting bar.

my concerns/questions
what other things do we need in our "run"?
How do you get your "girls" to go back in the coop?
If you have a pretty safe run and open area do you still lock up the hens at night or do they tend to stay in there until morning by themselves?

Generally when your chicks are fully feathered out (6-8 weeks of age) you can let them outside (in run) But, if you lock them in the coop with food and water, for 3-4 days, they will consider it their home and should return to it at dusk and hopefully fly up and roost inside.

Welcome!

Fingers crossed for no roos! This is a link to the Breed & Gender Forum where, if you would like some opinions, you can post individual photos of the youngsters: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/15/what-breed-or-gender-is-this

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out
