I have a Holland lop that is 3 months old now..I have been told different things about what to feed him and what ages..Everyone is different..Can anyone HELP! Right now he only eats pellets and Timothy Hay...I was told not to give him any fresh vegs until 6 months of age,or any fresh grass until then too..But the other day at work a lady said she feeds that as young as when they can eat! I dont know what to do! Can i give him an apple, carrot, lettuce? PLEASE HELP!

You'll want to stay away from the lettuce especially if it is iceberg. Way too much water and doesn't supply enough nutrients to make it worth while. As for the other veggies start with very small amounts. Then slowly increase the amount over a period of several weeks. You don't want to overwhelm the rabbit's digestive system.

I keep reading about minimum ages for veggies and grass. It leads me to wonder who the writers think feeds the young wild rabbits pellets in lieu of the natural stuff.

Just remember that vegs and grass should be a treat and don't over do it.

I saw a rabbit this last summer at the fair that weighed half of what he should. The owners were overdoing the vegs and grass and they pass through the system to fast for them to gain much nutrients, etc. from them.

I would say keep him on the pellets and hay. Only feed the veggies as treats. Stay away from iceberg lettuce, and cabbage. cabbage can give them GI Stasis(gas). The lettuce will give them the runs. Vegetables are not very good for rabbits, but are ok as treats. Most rabbit breeders will not feed vegetables to their rabbits at all because we know that they can be harmful to them.

They are not nutritionally necessary. I know groups like the house rabbit society promote feeding them over pellets. But really what they do is more harm then good. A lot of those rabbits they feed out on that are plagued with problems like dental disease, gi stasis, and lack of proper conditioning due to not getting fed right.

If you want to add variety to the diet give a little bit of Quaker oats oatmeal now and then. Or some whole grain rabbit conditioner. Just a tablespoon at a time.

I have 2 holland lops. I read that after 6 months you can feed them certain vegitables. The buck I have is older but he gets soft pooh if he gets greens but he is ok if I give him a carrot. Which is not an every day thing though. I usually give him one as a treat at the end of the week.

Here is a site with lots of information about Holland lop rabbits.

Thanks you everyone for the input..I was just wanting to give it as a treat, I gave him a carrot the other day he just looked at it,but after awhile started munching it..He is done with it now and his poop is still the same..So I guess he is good..Thanks to all
