Looks like a Rat snake, to me. Don't kill it, they eat other snakes including venomous snakes like Copperheads.
We have so many different types of snakes here, but they control mice, rats, shrews, etcetera, so I don't kill them. I don't kill any snakes except Copperheads, and only if they come in the yard. I sometimes pick up the little ones like Ring-necked and Brown snakes. They're small (less than a foot long) and they rarely bite.
I have done my utmost to make my hoop coop snake proof, but I did have a couple get in last year...I think I plugged the gaps.
