How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

2 from the GC girls. Found the Banty hens sitting one one egg apiece. I chased the Banty hens out of the nest box where they squawked at me and got all puffed up. Photobomb by Bossy.

You borrowed a rooster? Are you wanting to get some fertile eggs for brooding or to incubate?
Yes I borrowed my friends silkie Roo to cover my silkie hens.

My eldest niece is a teacher and she has been hatching eggs for the past few yrs for her school.

Last year I gave her 12 eggs and she returned 10 chicks to me (7 pullets and 3 cockerels) 😳 I kept 5 of the pullets, sold two of them and got rid of the cockerels.

This year I told her I would only hatch silkies as they are easier to sell. So on the 29th I will start collecting eggs from my 4 silkies and my niece will pick up a dozen of them from me on the 9th May, and set them on the 10th.

Personally I have no wish to hatch eggs, it’s too hard to get rid of the cockerels, I don’t have a place nearby to process poultry, and it’s hard to even give them away.

I tried to talk her into taking some day old pullets I would get from the feed store (in from Hoovers Hatchery), but nope she wanted the kids to see the eggs develop and hatch.

I bought 4, 1 day olds home on Tuesday to try to change her mind (gosh they are cute) but nope she wants eggs 🤨

Come on who can resist these?!

3 Buff Orp, and 1 Americana

17 eggs today, which includes 2 silkie eggs. Not sure what’s up with my silkies they are normally very reliable mostly every day layers when not broody. But they are 3 yrs old now so I guess they are slowing up.

One of the pink eggs has been very chalky and brittle - I have my suspicions as to who is laying that one so she is getting calcium tablets. I am hoping she just goes through a moult stops laying and resets her system.

Those brittle eggs go back to the chooks to enjoy.

My polish x silkie pullet has been laying her pretty pink eggs for a couple weeks now but her eggs remain very tiny, even smaller than the silkie eggs.
