I still need help with "new" egg scale (orig. Jiffy Way, 1940s)

The cotter pin was just a simple way that you knew the egg weigher was setting level.

Use adjustable screw for speed. If you had a bunch of eggs that were borderline--you would adjust the screw so it bottomed out at a certain weight so the heavier eggs would make the screw head hit the metal part. The lighter eggs wouldn't.

We used one of those things for years! Thanks for the memory!

Here is a scale my father just gave me today that he got out of the attic, it wasmy Grandmothers egg scale, all original parts and paint.

WOW! It's in fabulous shape! A family treasure for sure! :)

I just got one, new old stock, off Ebay. I am still waiting for the delivery, but I'm very excited!

The cotter pin deal is just like a plumb bob to let you know the scale is sitting level. Not really necessarily if it's sitting on a level surface to start with. My scale just needs adjustment once in a while by turning the little screw. Not scientific, but it works well enough for me. Hope this helps!

Thank you!! I couldn't figure out what in the world I was supposed to do with the cotter pin! Now I just need to adjust the scale a bit with the screw.

There was a long story here that I typed up and was trying to format all the photos, ad all the sudden it went blank and everything typed disappeared.

Here are photos of a Jiffy-Way scale that show he original calibration instruction.

I hope this is helpful.
