How can you tell if an egg is fertilized or not?

My roo is always on top of our poor little hen. When do the eggs get fertilized? Like that day or....? How can you tell?
 
if you put the eggs in an incubator for a while i know you candle them after a certain amount of time ...if veins appear then its fertilized and you have a baby growing...

if you just put the eggs in the fridge and have breakfast in the morning thats fine too...the egg may have been fertilized but it will not develop

someone will come along and tell you how long they have to be in a bator for....i have no idea i just eat the eggs from my chickens
