When to feed layer pellets

I bought my pullets 6 weeks ago and was told they were somewhere between 6-18 weeks old. They have been growing well on the pullet grower but I don't really know how old they are. Is there a way visually you can tell an approximate age as I don't want to start them on the layer pellets until ready Thanks

It won't hurt them to start laying pellets. Chicks who are hatched under hens in the farmyard and run with the flock get layer pellets from day one:>) Thier momma helps them find layer pellet crumbs.

Perhaps if they are in the farmyard and layer feed is not their sole source of food, chicks can eat that feed without harm. Otherwise it is much, much safer to feed a chick something that isn't 3% or 4% calcium.

Marg it sounds like your pullets are going along just fine on the grower. They won't need the extra calcium in the layer feed until they begin to produce an eggshell each day.

If you still have the grower feed when egg production begins, you can supplement it with oyster shell. The pullets should be fine with that until you decide to transition them to layer feed.
