eastern phoebes - ornithology question

I've got eastern phoebes nesting in my wood shed- which I think is great because phoebes are in the flycatcher family and I could certainly use their services in my yard! Well, I couldn't help myself the other day and I stole a peek into the nest while the mama was gone- I saw 5 phoebe eggs and 1 brown-headed cowbird egg.

Now I know the brown-headed cowbird is a frequent brood parasite of the eastern phoebe, and if the cowbird's egg is removed from the nest, half of the time the cowbird will come back and destroy the nest. The phoebe mama doesn't seem to mind this intrusion so far. What I couldn't find out was: once they are all hatched, will the cowbird chick kill the phoebe chicks (push them out of the nest)?

I KNOW I shouldn't interfere with nature, but I want those phoebes to live! If the cowbird chick is going to kill them no matter what, I figure a 50% chance of survival is better than no chance at all.

Does anybody know about this topic? Will the cowbird kill the phoebes?
Thanks

I found an article about it that mentions that cowbirds in one study destroyed the nests their eggs were removed from of 56% of the time. And it said that phoebes typically rear the cowbird young, And, as you know, the cowbird is often the only one to survive.

It does not say that the cowbird kills the chicks. It seems like the cowbird chick gets along fine with the others, but is often the only survivor because it gets the bulk of the food.

It's a tough call. The cowbird isn't going to be a little murderer, but the others may be underfed.

I've read about this and a naturalist that wrote the book said she did remove a cowbird's egg from the nest. They just crowd out the smaller, weaker phoebe chicks. Phoebes raise one or two families right under my deck over the bsmt door every year. I love them!

We are backyard bird watchers and cowbirds are considered a pest/predator that are shot on site. Even those awful blackbirds don't get treated thay way around here.

Ok, I got rid of the cowbird egg yesterday... and mama phoebe is back on her nest. So far so good!

Just hoping it stays that way!

Update:

The phoebe nest is doing great! all 5 eggs hatched and the little ones are looking quite healthy. I'm really glad I evicted the cowbird

I am too. I check my bluebird box periodically, also, and alls well in there. They are on their third batch. After this one, they will need a vacation to Tahiti, Im sure.
