Why do some act like Chicken Scratch should be avoided like the plague

Okay nobody stone me for this please!! I only feed mine free range chickens once a day. I feed it at night so they are more willing to go in at night. They have 4 acres to run and they get what they need from that. ONce winter comes i will feed them all day. Layer feed, osyter shell, cracked corn and oats. And what they find. Im working on a kind of chicken suet bar.
 
Ninny, I only feed mine once a day, even in the winter. I feed in the evening also. I feel this encourages more foraging during the day and it also gives them a full belly in case they didn't get enough during the foraging.

I never give MY birds alot of scratch. Alot of fat content and I have heard that is is not good to give them alot of corn when it is hot. My husband on the other hand, will give his layers corn mash and scratch every other day...... I never give my white silkies corn....makes some of their white feathers turn yellow..
