I was goin to feed chickens yesterday and noticed the cats tryin to get something, turns out it was a baby hawk. I assume its a red tail or sparrow maybe?? Now we have this baby hawk and have no clue what to do with it. We called the game and wildlife last night and left a message, and called again today and told them we had no clue what to do with it, The lady laughed and said thats why she hadn't called back that she didn't know either. HMMM???? so she gives us a number for a vet to call, they give us another number for another vet, that one gives us another number and you get the point.. I dont want it to die, and I'm pretty sure their protected species. If anyone can give me some ideas on what to do I'd appreciate it.

Here is the lil guy

It's a baby Kestrel, aka sparrow hawk. I don't know where you are in VA but there is a huge wildlife rehab center in Weyer's Cave. Here is a link to their website.

They
should be able to give you advice and put you in touch with somebody that may be closer to you. Good for you for saving this baby!

Avoid vets..

they like to spout crap like 'we wouldnt be able to rehabilitate it properly and it wouldnt live a full life' and then insert the needle full of DEATH

Even if it has to spend a life in one of those GIANT aviaries that people drop by and leave food (birdy wildlife park, cant describe what im thinking) that would be better than death.

Or one of those places where they can leave, but are still fed until they work it out for themselves

My dad raised a Kestrel like that when I was a kid. He mainly fed it hamburger. When it got old enough to fly he took it outside and fed him there for a few days. THen let him out, he only came back for about a week then we never saw him again.

She didn't call you back because she didn't know what to do either!!!! OMG! Can you water it and feed it in the mean time? Call that number back and tell the lady you want to talk to someone else in her department NOW! What is wrong with everyone lately?

Now that I'm done ranting. He is as cute as a button! Is his mom outside looking for him? Can you put him outside in the cage away from your cat and see if she comes when he calls for her. If she comes back them you can let him out and let nature take over. The non emergency number for your police department might offer some information. I'm sure he is protected and the animal control officer might have information.

If all fails put the little guy on Craigs list FOR SALE and wait for the FEDS to show up.

Good luck and thanks for doing the right thing.

I just read a lil on that site, it seems like since its fully feathered it may try and fly if left alone, I may take it out in the woods here in a few and trun it out and see if it flys.

I have no clue about rehabing, I am sure the other posters can get you to the right place. I just wanted to say "Awww, that's the cutest little baby hawk!" I am glad you saved him!!
