I am wondering about moving the chicks outside. They are 4 weeks old and are beginning to pick at each others tail feathers while in the brooder, a 50 gal rubbermaid bin for 9 chicks. the weather here in DAllas is nice, day temps are getting in the 70's to 80 but the night goes down to about 55. If I do move them outside will they need a light for heat? And if so, do I need to put something over the reflector part so they dont fly up to it & get burned? right now I have them in my attached garage with no heat source. Any ideas? thanks!

hey i am not sure exactly how old my chicks are but im sure they are abt that age when i moved them out i am in oklahoma and the weather has been the same....i have no heat lamp but...they are in an enclosed stall in a pen!! what temp did u get their heat lamp turned down to inside...id go by that good luck!!! and trust me you will worry yourself to death the first few nights!!!!
My chicks will be 4 weeks on Tuesday and I moved them out to their coop last night. Our temps are still a bit chillier than yours, and my chickies are fine. You will need a heat lamp for the nights, though. At 4 weeks, they can handle a temp of about 65-70 as a low end. You dont want them to start picking each other because its hard to break them of it once they start, so better to move them out now and give them more room so they dont start it.
How old do they have to be to incorporate them with adult hens?
To introduce them to adult chickens, you should wait until they are similar in size (8-10 weeks). Also, it is better to move them into the coop at night so they all wake up together and chatter and get to know each other. There will be less instances of the younger ones being picked on this way.
My chicks are the same age. Will a straw lined box do at night, as there is no power. The night temp is around 10C/50F. The chicks have been in my study until now but they smell pretty bad!

50 deg F...thats still pretty cool for them. I would keep them inside a little longer if you can, or if not..at least try to get them a heat source out there. Just make sure if you put a light out in the coop, that they can NOT get on it, or knock it down into the straw and start a fire.

My chicks are just over 4 weeks old now and they were hatched under a broody hen. They have been outside since hatching but the mother has done all of the work. They have also been in with the big girls for about 3 weeks now. The big girls are more afraid of the chicks and they stay well clear. The mother also lets them know who's boss. My biggest concern is containment as the chicks are very inquisitive but sometimes can't remember how to get back to the mother. Small holes in the fence and things like that.
