How long do eggs last after they have been laid?

A thread from last week had a link to mother earth magazine or something like that, where they tested eggs under different conditions, and diff. eggs - store bought, home grown non fertile and home grown fertile.
I believe that if you do not wash off the bloom and refridgerate right away, their experiment was still going after 8 months; they were eating these eggs and planned on continuing for one year.
I will look and see if I can find the thread

found the thread from 7/ 29 by Ridgerunner- the link takes you to motherearthnews.com/Sustain ..., sorry I don't know how to put the link on here. interesting experiment though.

Just an interesting note -- My 83 year old Grandpa said his Grandma (she raised him) would store eggs in a barrel. She'd put a layer of salt (what kind -- I am not sure) and then a layer of eggs. A layer of salt, a layer of eggs. This is what they did in the winter when the hens were not laying as frequently. He said she kept them in the kitchen. Just found it interesting.

After about 3 months they get 'thicker' in the shell but they are good for at least six months.

By the time supermarket eggs reach the shelves, they are between two weeks and one month old. The Mother Earth News cited in their study 90 days.

From the article.
" If we'd had our druthers, understand, we'd have eaten something else ... but, under survival conditions, we could have lived on the completely unprotected 90-day-old eggs if we'd have had to."
