ok..i am going to the city council tomorrow and i am trying to figure out how to covey this. i looked over the code again, and goats are allowed in city limits after all as long as you have an acre per animal. in the same paragraph it states that i can have up to 5 dogs in my backyard, with no regard to size. i am wanting to somehow ask them to make an exception for pygmy goats because theoretically i could keep 5 great danes or whatever out there and they would cause way more damage than my 3 pygmies that are smaller than most dogs. i also want to ask them to change the ordinance regarding chickens. they are also allowed as long as their coop is 100 feet from any residence. i want to get them to change that to allow a small flock of birds in an average sized backyard and list some of the benefits of having them.
how can i word this properly and be able to get my point across?

i feel pretty confident about this because there were loads of comments in yesterdays paper in favor of our story, (many thanks to the people here who commented, thank you!!) and i think this could help our case.

Not sure about the goats, but as far as the chickens are concerned, you may want to speak to your neighbors. If you can get written consent from the neighbors who would be directly affected, they may be willing to waive the 100 ft. clause.

I dont know how to do it.. But there was a lady here in my town that just got our pet law changed. For the better.. She got it so you can own any mini farm animal.. We could already have chickens and roosters. At a limit of 10.. Now we can have all the following farm animals in mini; sheep, goats, cows, horses, and pigs..

Maybe you could check out our newspaper at www.currypilot.com and ask the editers to possibly send you a copy of it.. I copied the article that was in our newspaper and put it on BYC some where. Let me find it..

Maybe you could get in contact with the lady who got the codes changed. She may be able to help you out..

Good luck on your quest..

thanks!
i feel pretty good about it since you can actually have any larger animal in the city, you just have to have a bunch of land..but i could go and get 5 100 pound dogs and cram them in the backyard..i wonder which would smell worse??

Well I found the post where I copied the article about allowing miniature livestock in our town..

Heres the link...

I did not reread it to see if it had the ladys name in it or not. But I believe it did. If not maybe the newspaper can get you in touch with her.. If not. Maybe write a letter to the editor asking for the help of the people involved in changing the codes...

Remind them that: Goat poop does not smell and is excellent fertilizer.

Your goats won't bite anyone. Heck, they don't even have top teeth! There is a reason that all states have "dangerous dog" laws, but no "dangerous goat" laws. Your goats won't savage anything more than some grass.

They are excellent grazers and weed control.

Goats aren't any noisier than dogs.

Your goats are smaller than many popular dog breeds. Just imagine the noise and poo of 5 Great Danes or even German Shepherds.

Goats are pets. They are a domestic animal, not some wild thing. They are trainable and can sleep in a dog house. Many people who are allergic to dogs are not allergic to goats and can keep them as pets.

Good luck with the city council. You might take along some pics of your kids with your goats. Cute kids + cute goats = win!

Trust me put just 3 dogs on a small cement slab, don't pick up the poo, wash it to the side and see if it don't smell worse than a feed lot. I have more experience with that than I care too.

I know you all know what I'm talking about. I just wish city officials would see the light and smell the difference. And, hear the difference. If I could go with you to the meeting I would! Good luck, I'm wishing the best for you.
