Roost spacing to prevent lower roost from being dirtied. Suggestions?

The title pretty much sums it up.
I will have a roost about two feet from the floor and also a halfway roost at an angle below it and I have no idea how far it is from the roost a bird is on to its vent or how large an area under a roost is dirtied e.t.c. so I have no idea where I should place the bottom roost so it is rarely messed upon.

I'm sure there will be people who have some experience with this,

Thanks in advance.

I put my next lower roost 1 ft further from the wall than the top one. The top is 1 ft out from wall and the next is 2 ft out from the wall.
Also, I have my top roost 3.5 ft high so it is higher than the nest boxes.

I put my roosts 1 to 1.5 feet apart using 2x4's. There are 5 roosts 7 feet long. I have my roosts all at the same height across the coop.

My girls (17) were all trying to fight to get to the highest roost with the roo and some always had poo on them

so after several different layouts, this is what works best for me. I made a chicken ladder up to one of the roosts and they climb up that and disperse (jump) where they want.

With the roosts this way, they can't poo on eachother and there isn't the struggle of who's who in the roost!

So this is like a leaning-against-the-wall ladder-style arrangement?

14-18" inches (measured horizontally, not taking into account any vertical difference) is good; more is better. You can do less but some chickens will get pooed on sometimes.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

I don't know how big your coop is but I use a ladder style arrangement. They usually just use the lower ones to hop up to the top but I don't have any problem with poop accumalating on the roosts, it all drops to the floor.
