Mallard Ducks--Breeding and Laying Eggs

I would like to know too.I have a 3 yr old mallard female.She has no mate,but has layed about 22 eggs in my flower garden in a nest.She won't leave it unless I force her out and then she swims in the pond and I take food to her.Then it's right back to the nest.She's been on it for at least 3 weeks or so.She has never hatched any eggs ,is this strange behavior?Her best friend is our lab and our cat.They all play together....I know that is really strange,a duck and a hunting dog!I hope someone can give me some answers.Thanks,I appreciate any help.

You should definitely remove the infertile eggs from under her, or they could rot and explode, or she could simply waste away like my buff ALMOST did.

If there is no male duck to mate with her, there will be no fertile eggs, and they won't hatch into anything.


And you haven't lived until you've had a rotten egg explode on you.

Yeah, I've had several go bad, but not because of my ducks!

Can you believe I actually forgot an egg in my room once?!
It left a green stain!

Sooner or later she'll forget the eggs, start laying again, and put more weight on.

Maybe next time you notice she's gone broody, you can let her sit on them for a few days and then buy some fertile hatching eggs? You could have loads of ducklings!

Just make sure she's in a secure pen with a nest that can't be blown over.
 
I don't have mallards duck I have khaki campbell ducks and just starting to day the two drakes where trying to mate with her. We have 3 boys and 1 girl. We didn't figure out we had 3 boys till last month, When they stared to mature. I know she will start laying eggs . But can u eat the fertilized eggs. I don't think I really want to but is it possible?
