Quote: I think I need to try this. Will still use shavings for nest boxes though.
I completely empty nest boxes every other week since all is made from wood, I use a combination of DE and stall refresher mixed together on the bottom then a layer of straw over top that,,(cuts down on dust when they scratch at the straw)...the PDZ stall refresher that I use is a heavy sand and keeps the DE from being to dusty

Ahhhh, so this stuff is like adding baking soda to the litter box for cats. Gotcha!

How does it last compared to shavings. I go through a ton of shavings at a time when I start cleaning coops & brooders & can it be used in brooders or just with older birds. Don't think it would work for my waterfowl very well since it looks like this stuff clumps when wet. I have mostly waterfowl & quail. Only 2 coops & 2 cages with chickens. The rest are quail, turkeys, ducks & geese...,plus 4 brooders full of keets, poults, ducks & chicks.

SS:

I can get a bail of pine shaving for about the same price as a bail of hay (at my local outlet)...kinda weird but my birds kick all shaving out of the nesting boxes and sleep in a scrum in the boxes...mine don't roost....

so nice to see others,,,I thougt i was talking to myself (not that i do that)

Quote: I don't like hay. Tried that & straw both & they tend to carry a lot more mites. Never had a mite problem with shavings but know for a fact I had chicks pick up mites from hay last fall. I hatched them myself & they never had contact with any other birds so the only place they could have gotten mites from was the hay in the brooder I used when I ran out of shavings.
