That is good you had a generator also! Makes a big difference! Sorry to change the subject, but I just noticed you have speckled Sussex too! I love that breed. We have about 4, of them. I want to get more!

The generator is wonderful ~ although I dread getting the propane bill since the prices went up so high.

I love my speckled sussex. I just got them last spring ~ they are beautiful! I have 5 that I got as chicks from the feed store and gave them to my broody frizzled bantam cochin to raise. She is the best little mother.

We have a propane furnace, I know what you mean about the prices. Yikes! Our furnace quit working around the time we had that polar vortex hit. We have been using our wood stoves ever since (although wood is starting to get dangerously low).
May I ask which feed store you found them at? I originally got mine from TSC off rt 30. I looked last year but never saw them. I also called frequently to see if they had them. I really need to start replacing my girls, they are getting old and are not laying very much at all.

Hope your brother is doing ok.. :)

I hope he has power back today ~ if not he is coming to my house to do laundry, take a shower and generally warm up.

I hope he gets his power back too. It is no fun not having power. It is good however that you live so close to him that you can help him out if he needs it. My brother lives in ME and is at least two hours away. Little bit harder to lend a helping hand...

I got them at the West York Agway. They got their chicks from Mt Healthy and they will special order anything that Mt. Healthy sells. I wanted the Speckled Sussex and they special ordered 25 even though I only wanted 5. They also mostly order sexed pullets and not straight run. I got 27 chicks from them last spring and everyone was a pullet.

Oh wow, now that's impressive! You don't always get what you wanted, I am glad they all turned out to be pullets. I may have to try them this spring. :)

They usually post on Craig's List when they are getting chicks and also have a list at the store of what they have pre-ordered for what dates. I think they got chicks one or twice a week for about 2 months. And if it is not on the list ~ they will try to get what you want. I was much happier with them than TSC. Also ~ they didn't have a minimum amount you had to buy.

I finally got to Wal-Mart last night to get some more of the decolorized iodine that I need to put on my goose foot. It is starting to look better thankfully. Have to bring her in soon to soak her foot and put the iodine on again. Amazing that a tiny little bottle costs over $3. I know, it doesn't seem like that much money however when you consider how much product you get for the price it's a little pricy.

Oh now that is awesome! It drives me nuts when they try to tell you how many you have to buy.
