Is anyone else concerned that it is so warm already? I see a heatwave devastating our crops and animals this summer. You can put a fan in a coop, but idk what to think about the plants.

I was concerned, but seems it's going back to the 60's tomorrow. Around 10yrs+, I remember it being 70's in April and I don't remember much of a bad affect on anything. I didn't have birds then, though. And I have a black thumb, so gardens are out for me.

Oh, I just heard the poultry auction is on the 9th at the Bloom Fair Grounds and the show on the 10th.

I'm a little concerned. We had such an extreme winter and then suddenly, it's excessively hot for this time of year. I'm not sure what to make of it. I've already seen my flock panting while they're out free ranging. I had an ice cream bucket filled with water to go dump on the fire in the fire pit and I was swarmed by the birds. I got them their own bucket full after that.

So far, if I push Niko off the nest area, she'll go outside but then she goes right back in. If I can't break the broody, could I give her some meat chick eggs? I really don't need any more layers even though I would love to have a real rainbow of birds. I think Niko saw my post about wanting to participate in chicken math. Who put the Internet in the coop?

Nature is an amazing thing. We always worry, but she always works things out. While some things may struggle, others will thrive.

Lost a bird the other day to a predator, broadly reason.

I realized it was in front of my game can, so I pulled the card.

Batteries were dead, so I didn't get it, but I checked out the pics from the winter.

Squirrel, rabbit, cat, S.O., possum, fox. The night pic of the fox is cool, if it weren't right next to my coop.

400

Quakertown tractor supply had ten pekin left onsale $1!!!! I got 6 might still be those four left today!

So cute! I would totally drive up ther and get them if I could. They are adorable. Great pic too!

Uh oh, I think Niko has gone broody.

I think one of mine might be too.....

Certain breeds are still selling really well, the past few weeks I have sold all the Ameraucanas I can hatch before they are dry, but I have a lot of extra BCM's and Olive Eggers. I'm not too concerned because it's warm enough they can go outside fairly young and both of those sex out quickly (compared to Ams with their pea combs). I really won't mind raising a few dozen extra pullets, if I can't sell them all, I would like to free range a bunch of them. I never need to "fire sale" them away like TSC does because I can raise and release them, and make more money (in the long run) than selling them for $1.

Last year, my most desperate customers contacted me right after "chick days" was over. They did the "right thing" and got their coop built first, but then when they went to TSC for chicks, there were none to be had. Anyone know when "chick days" ends this year? I should be prepared for that.

I just called the q-town TSC to see about those Ducks. They are gone, and he said they won't be getting anymore. @dheltzel If my girl is truly going broody, can I buy a few eggs? I can return the chicks, if you like. I'll be returning some anyways! Haha.

I sure hope not. Mount I think if they survived this brutal Winter, most can make it.

I think Fauna saw that post too, she's getting awfully disturbed if I come near the nest since about 4:30. We shall see tomrorow, maybe she will snap out of it. :p

Sure, I can always spare some eggs. Let her sit on some golf balls or wooden eggs for a few days to see if she's committed. I find that just putting them into a different coop breaks all my broodies (except for the cochin bantams and silkies).

I think all the large fowl hens we have just don't have the genetic disposition to commit to much. I found 4 broodies in the 4 nest boxes in the main layer pen today. I moved them all to the bachelor rooster coop that has nest boxes to see if any of them really want to sit on eggs, I bet none of them will be in the nest boxes next time I check. Silly hens - think they are tricking me into giving them eggs to hatch when they are not "all in".
