toxic foods

They are?!?
No, I've never fed my girl potato, but I never knew this.
I'm going to to keep an eye on this post!
The things I'm learning.....!

Hey Tricia,
Thanks for the info on the shavings.
Cedar is toxic if they eat it.

I know it's not food, but I put it here in case any other newbies come looking for what to keep away from their flock.

Good idea - thanks!

Potato is ok to feed them if they are cooked first. I feed them to my girls with no problem. I think it is the raw skins that can be bad for them. When I boil fresh eggs I always cut up a potato & boil it with the eggs. This helps them to peel better. Then I give the potato to the chickens as a treat.

Avocado is also meant to be poisonous to them as well. I fed it to them once before I knew, and they just refused to eat more than a few pecks of it. Sensible creatures really.

Besides feed, what else can you throw to the chickens to eat (keeping in mind anything toxic)?

Cresty

Millie is thoroughly spoiled, she gets a mix of
laying mash
cracked corn
cocketiel mix
fresh veg ( a leaf/chunk or two of whatever I may have on hand-broccoli, lettuces, etc)
and, of course, oyster shell
