Feeding chickens soybeans?

I know a breeder who has the soy beans ground and mixed in with other grains to give the feed a higher protein ratio. I don't think straight soy bean, in any form, would be healthy.

Any others out there with thoughts?

My birds are fed edamame, a type of soybean. We boil them, and feed the birds the now soft shells. They are great layers, never molt, and have no health issues. I say your safe.

What's wrong with soy based things?

And BRR, how do your birds' feathers look since they never molt? I actually like seeing my birds in a heavy molt, since they look so much better than before with their glossy new plumage, after they've finished with their molt.

soak the soybeans overnite, boil for 20 minutes, cool drain and refridgerate. I feed 1 pint for 16 birds every day. Will keep for more than a week in fridge. Soybeans 70% protien.

I was wondering if you could provide a source for 70% protien claim.
Here is what Perdue University say.
"The primary goal of a soybean crusher is to maximize the pounds of oil and meal processed from every bushel of soybeans. An average soybean bushel of 60 lb contains 35% protein, 18.5% oil, and 5% fiber, and yields 11 lb of oil and 48 lb of 44% protein meal. The crush margin, which is the difference between the value of soybean meal plus oil and the purchase price of raw soybeans, is generally based on this average end-product yield."

Hate GMO in my diet, my ladies diet. Can't avoid all of it unless you have tons of money but I personally don't supplement with it. My girls like pintos, black beans. I think (don't quote me) that they are 16- 17 % protein. Same reason I grew organic heirloom corn for seed for next year. My girls get oats, wheat and BO sunlower seeds for scratch. Just my feeling, really hate GMOs.
