2 production reds
and a white plymouth rock
last week i went to let the girls out and saw ellie-may my beloved white plymouth rock lying motionlessly on the coop floor. there was no sign of injury, the only predators we have are racoons, coyotes and the neighborhood cat. im completely clueless to what caused here to die so im just asking on what could of caused this she was acting normal. i do have a grudge that the neighbor could have poisened her

Soccerguy...im so sorry for your loss....is there a way you can have a necropsy done on her? If you find she was poisoned...maybe you can show the report to the nabor...and tell them.....you will be watching...so sad.

In my area it is a crime (punishable by jailtime and/or fines) to poison or harm someone else's animal. I'm sure there are laws about livestock too. So I'd get a necropsy done, and report it to the police, or at least ask them about it.

Animals can and do have the same ailments happen to them as human. It could have been a heart attack or anurism. As an example, one of my friends was deer hunting and was watching a squirel munching a nut, all of a sudden it just went ridgid and dropped.

The only way to tell for sure would be necropsy. If it was posion, I'd be surprised if it would only get into one chicken in sufficent quantities to cause death and not at least make the others sick.

Sometimes chickens just die. We had one of our first ones (about 3 years old) running around getting treats and minutes later she went in the coop and hopped on the roost with the others and we heard a "thud". And there she was was, dead on the floor.
Sometimes it just happens.
I'm sorry for your loss.

ill try to get a necropsy done, she was approximately 4 years old and what was strange was she had her eyes closed and she was right below the roost? i didnt think that here eyes would close automatically when she died so could she have died in here sleep?

I think it sounds reasonable that she died in her sleep. That necropsy should put your mind at ease, though, and if she died of something contagious it will enable you to prevent further losses.
