How much oyster shell

Besides the Kuhl 50 lb range feeder in the run I have a buillt in feeder with a divider that holds oyster shell on one side and feed on the other. I've had people comlain about how hard it is to break the egg shells so evidently the birds are getting what they need.

Offered in a dish 24/7 in the henhouse incase one of them wants some. That's how it's done here. No adding to feeds. Some hens just require more calcium than others.

Hi,

Usually, I crush up their old shells and give it back to them. I also offer kale and some other calcium rich vegetables occasionally. Today when I was at the feed store the woman at the counter insisted that the egg shells weren't enough and that I needed to buy the oyster shell.

My guideline is how hard it is to crack the eggs. The woman said that a hard shell was not a good evaluation of whether they are getting enough calcium from the shells.

Anyone have any thoughts about that?

Im having the same problem, how much is to much? You say they will know when they have eaten enough. I think you are right thank you

We've been having a problem with one of our Peking ducks and balloon like shells here and there outside.
We are in a limestone area.I bought the oyster shells.and after reading all of this information will offer it free choice! Thank you all for your input.
