Raising quail for eggs

I am interested in getting some quail for eggs. What kind of quail do most people raise if they have eggs in mind. Does it matter much?
 
Hello,
I believe Coturnix Quail are the egg-laying champions of the world. Given mild weather, and 14 hours of light a day, up to 300 eggs per year can be expected from a healthy female Coturnix. Shorter hours of light, and colder temperatures, will reduce the egg production. Supplemental lighting can be added, when the natural daylight hours become shorter.
 
I think the coturnix eggs are beautiful.

I almost hate cracking them open because they are so pretty (I am such a girl sometimes! LOL)

my 2 cents match the above- Coturnix are awesome for eggs- I'd say I've got an egg per day from each of my hens with the exception of days when they get stressed, which isn't that often! They are egg making champs for sure!

one of mine even consistently lays a blue egg with brown speckles- it is beautiful!

There are girls and then there are girly girls. I am not a girly girl...well...unless there is a shoe sale involved! (Or a pile of pretty quail eggs

Hello!!

My Mom and I are considering a quail egg venture. We live in far northern California, and there are lots of wild quail here. That's why we thought we had good conditions. I saw your post and felt like you had a lot of good advice to impart. The wild quail here are California Mountain Quail, we would of course be willing to use different birds. We sit at about 2000 feet, and otherwise our weather is similar to Redding's. Of course cooler, because we are higher. Any thoughts, advice? What do you think?
 
Good morning! I dont know if you realized the thread you replied to is a little old..... Wifezilla is still around but im not sure the others are....As to your quail... The Mountain quail you have in the wild are a awesome bird. They are the largest of the quail too. But they are very expensive and actually one of the toughest to keep in captivity.... They are born toe pickers and like to find new ways die for sport it seems. Coturnix would likely be your best gateway to keeping quail. they will do fine after they are of age in outside pens in your area. But in reality, most of the new worlds would do well for the area. California, Bobs, or Gambel's quail would be a great next step if you wanted to move up to more advanced breeds. I hope you move forward and get your birds.
